Have A Cigar

Have-A-Cigar

If you are in the market for a technology system for your custom home, you are in the top 10% in personal wealth. Congratulations. You didn't achieve that by squandering your hard-earned money.

Of all the choices to be made about your new home's amenities, technology must be the most daunting. It's the least understood by most clients and builders. Many aspects of technology will change over time, yet you have to make decisions now about what will be included in your new home. This is the conundrum that causes many home owners and home builders to shy away from technology. I often hear the excuse "it's all wireless now, so I can decide later." Not really. Wireless solutions exist because so many homes are not adequately wired for technology. They are not as reliable or cost-effective as wired versions, but they prevent costly retrofitting for things that were not prewired for during the home's construction.

Your technology provider should be someone you trust for their honesty and expertise. They can guide you through the maze of options and help prioritize your selections. Many things that are not essential to include in the original build can be prepared for at minimal cost. When does a luxury amenity become an essential amenity? Probably while you are still living in this home.

Some things that seem frivolous or techy can actually be convenient and cost effective. Here are some examples:

You may be happy with cable or satellite TV services now, but streaming options could save you money and provide better service later. Even cable and satellite providers have streaming services now. Video streaming requires very high bandwidth. Wire provides higher bandwidth with less interference than WiFi. Hard-wired TVs free up space on your WiFi network for things like laptop computers, tablets, and smart phones. Your TV should have a data cable. We put three at each TV location. Wire is cheap. Retrofitting isn't.

If you use a laptop, tablet, or smart phone you need a robust WiFi network. The wireless routers installed by IP service providers are woefully inadequate for a large custom home. A custom-designed WiFi network will provide the speed and coverage you need now and in the future.

Lighting Control provides convenience, beauty, energy efficiency, and can even be used to mimic the circadian rhythm of sunlight to promote better sleep.

Motorized shades may not be in the construction budget, but wiring for them now could save you from limiting your choices to battery-operated shades later, which have lower size and weight limits. Also, wired shades don't require periodic battery replacement, which can be a chore if the window is up high in a stairwell.

Make informed choices now and build your home with the right stuff. Your technology provider can help.
