Rack Me Baby
Why use an equipment rack for audio/video/network components? Three reasons:
1) Cable organization - cables are brought into the racks in a tight bundle, then run to each component along lacing bars in the rear, each one wrapped with a label for the component it connects to. This eliminates the rats nest of cables seen too often in residential technology installations. Troubleshooting is straightforward because wire paths are clear and uncluttered. It's time-consuming, but all of this effort results in a serviceable, professional installation.
2) Heat management - components are placed in the rack with an eye towards heat control through vent panels and fans at the top of the rack. Heat is the number one enemy of electronic devices. Managing air flow through the rack extends the life of all components.
3) Upgrades - Extra space is left in the rack for future equipment additions or replacement of existing components. Changes are made easily because space and cabling conditions are available at a glance.
