What Is Ketra?

What-Is-Ketra

Ketra is a line of light fixtures by Lutron, an industry leader in lighting control products. What sets Ketra apart from the competition is its use of 3 color LEDs and one white LED to provide a wide spectrum of colors and color temperatures. Everyone knows what variations in color are, but color temperature is much less understood. Color temperature refers to variations in the appearance of white light. In short, high color temperature is a bit bluish and low color temperature is a bit amber. Natural sunlight transitions from low to high and back to low color temperatures as the day progresses. This cycle is called Circadian Rhythm and controls how our bodies release hormones that affect our alertness and quality of sleep. Most light fixtures are fixed at one color temperature, for example "cool blue" or "warm amber." Ketra fixtures can be warm, cool, and everything in between. Lutron makes a controller that can use these variations to mimic the Circadian Rhythym of sunlight, providing health benefits that can't be achieved with lesser fixtures.

Another aspect of lighting is CRI, which is a measure of how accurately a light source illuminates the object’s true color compared to natural light. Typical lamps have a CRI of 50 to 80. Ketra fixtures are 90 CRI and above, which is excellent. They can maintain this high CRI rating across their entire range of color temperatures, which is a very rare accomplishment. This picture illuminates (pun intended) the difference that CRI can make:
